What can cause a tooth to fall out with no pain or blood?

In the past few months I have had a chunk of tooth break off and then tonight, when I was flossing, a whole tooth came out. Both times there was no blood or pain. I haven't been to the dentist for several years, no insurance. Obviously, I'm going to make an appointment now. I would just like to get an idea of what I'm dealing with.
